Memory Care – When It’s Time to Trust the Experts

Schedule a Visit

I’m worried my mom is forgetting things and getting confused.

When we visit our parents or loved ones, small lapses like misplacing keys or saying the wrong word can seem harmless. But when those moments start to increase such as forgetting medications, skipping meals, neglecting hygiene, asking the same questions repeatedly, missing important dates, or falling behind on bills it may be time to step in and address possible changes in memory or cognitive health.

How do I talk to my mom about getting help?

Starting the conversation is the first step toward understanding what’s happening. Choose a familiar, comfortable setting, and include one or two trusted family members so your loved one feels supported rather than judged.

Approach the topic with empathy and curiosity:

“I’ve noticed a few changes when you do X, Y, or Z. How worried should I be? What’s been going through your mind when that happens?”

Give them time to respond and share their experiences. Take notes and gently ask how they’ve been feeling lately or if anything in their routine or environment has changed. These conversations often take time, so approach them with patience and care.

I need to address my concerns with a doctor.

Offer words of encouragement to help your loved one feel less anxious about next steps:

“Peace of mind will be helpful for both of us; let’s figure out what might be causing this.”

If they seem open to the idea, you might say:

“There could be many things creating these symptoms. Let’s see if the doctor can help us understand what’s going on.”

This creates a sense of partnership and helps take the next important step, which is booking a doctor’s appointment for evaluation.
